This chapter summarizes phylogeny, chemical constituents, and pharmaceutical aspects of Ranunculales (i.e., a pharmacophylogenetic study of this medicinal order). Phytochemistry, ethnopharmacology, and pharmacology data are incorporated with regard to phylogeny of Ranunculales. The most studied compounds of this order include benzylisoquinoline alkaloid, flavonoid, terpenoid, saponin, lignan, etc. Bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids are abundant in Berberidaceae and Menispermaceae. The most frequent ethnopharmacological uses are for arthritis, heat-clearing and detoxification, ulcers, and carbuncles. The most studied bioactivities are anticancer/cytotoxic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities. Our pharmacophylogenetic analysis, integrated with medicinal uses, agrees with the taxonomy proposed by Wei Wang et al. in which Ranunculales is divided into seven subfamilies: Ranunculaceae, Berberidaceae, Menispermaceae, Lardizabalaceae, Circaeasteraceae, Papaveraceae, and Eupteleaceae. Chemical constituents and therapeutic efficacy of each taxonomic group are reviewed, and the underlying connection between phylogeny, chemical diversity, and clinical use is revealed; this facilitates conservation and sustainable utilization of Ranunculales pharmaceutical resources.
