Chapter 18 is aptly entitled “Arthropods as Vectors.” The opening sections of the chapter deal with the significance of arthropods as vectors of a number of diseases of humans. In addition to referring to those diseases caused by parasites as outlined in previous chapters, this chapter also takes up those diseases with which the arthropod plays a significant role in its spread to humans. In this context, the arthropods are grouped according to their classification which is seen at the end of the chapter. The biting dipterans include mosquitoes, blackflies, sandflies, tsetse flies, and tabanid flies with their associations with diseases such as anthrax, tularemia, bartonellosis, and hemorrhagic fever, to name a few. Other arthropods such as fleas, lice, and reduviid bugs are discussed relative to such diseases as the plague and relapsing fever. A section related to the acarines (ticks and mites) is at the end of the chapter. Diseases such as Lyme disease, typhus, ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever are discussed.
